Ok....someone has some explaining to do!

How come there isn't a myriad of comments on here espousing the therapeutic value in the beautiful process of shaping a neck with a spoke shave?

I bought my first one today. How good are they? Love that thing!

Yep..

There's quite a knack to setting em up right tho..
Fortunately we live in the days of Google, YouTube...

Enjoy

Ps believe it or not there's guys on here who round their necks off with a router!!

I am one of those guys - but the last few I have used the rasp - I enjoy the rasp. The scream of the router is a real aggravation.

Outrageous!

hey kid,

what's wrong  with a router?  I hate the blisters I get using a spoke shave, especially on hickory necks.... they invented electricity for a reason....

the best,

Wichita (a little lazy) Sam

a joy to use , people have said they're expensive but I don't think so, I've had mine since the 60s..

I used a rasp to shape my first neck. Actually it's called a sureform flat mill file. But i've always heard them called rasps. Really can see the benefits of a spoke shave. You can't sharpen a rasp. And the spoke shave is only a few bucks more than the tool I bought. Live and learn. Thanks Nation. So far this is the best place on the net to learn!

There is a very satisfying therapeutic experience in shaping a neck with a correctly adjusted spokeshave, if you have time you should try it.....but remember the trick is when to STOP ! ;-)

If you trawl through the myriad of discussions you`ll fine loads of us who can`t say enough about the joys of a good spokeshave ;) Had mine a few years and love it to bits.

I don't know what a spoke shave is. I round my necks with a utility knife and a rasp.

Jeff its just a posh utility knife ;)

What type of spoke shave are you guys using? did a little research and was overwhelmed at all the choices, striate, concave, convex, ect. do you get by with one tool to shape a neck or do you need a few different ones?

Like any endeavor where tools are concerned, you can get by with a simple straight spoke shave. But the other variants exist for a specific purpose. You may, for example, need to carve intricate new spokes for your buggy if you don't have a lathe. ;-)

Me, I use a belt sander, a rocking motion, and several passes to take off the majority of the wood on my laminated plywood necks, and use the rasp for touch-up and fine work. I can turn out a "finished" neck in about 20 minutes. Then, of course, there's the fine hand sanding to get the right feel.
