I just bought a couple of these from Gitty. When I received them they looked to high on the box. Looking for some pics where these have been installed to get an idea how they look on the top of the box. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Pickups, when installed, are adjustable for height using the mounting screws/springs. Based on your question, one may wonder if you have cut the holes necessary to install the pickups, or if you are actually trying to mount the pickups directly on top of the box lid.

I havn't cut the box yet it is a vintage box from an old cigar store in New York City. the pickup is rectangular. I can use the top of the pickup as a template. I'm not sure whether you mount it under the box lid and let the surface poke up thru the the lid or does it mount on the top of the lid. If it mounts on top it is just too high to get an acceptable action. I'm going to post a couple of pics in about an hour, see what you all think.

post a photo, that helps a lot..

here are several pics to illustrate...Marcus

I would run one brace bar from back to front so it sits under the neck , leave about 1in full thickness at either end and the rest take about a1/8in off so they is a gap so that the base is free to vibrate .

If you don't have a fretboard on the neck, the pickup will need to be flush with the surface of the cigar box. If you have a fretboard, you can raise it about a 1/8" or so. In either case, you're going to need to cut a notch in the neck below the pickup.

If the notch is deep enough, the neck board will get too weak. In that case, you'll need to add a brace board underneath the notch which extends at least 2" past the notch on either side. So your current design with the reinforcing blocks inside the box will need to change.

You will most likely need to cut a notch like Skeesix said.

Here is a picture of what we are talking about. On the right hand side, you can see where I cut a notch in the neck, and then reinforced it with additional wood underneath.

Once I understood the pickup is under the box lid this is the way I envisioned supporting it with a place to secure the screws and the springs. I can take it from here and thanks to one and all. I'll post a pic when I'm finished...Marcus

I stuck this up to give u an idea on how to set up your pick up. Where and how to place it.

Did I read this right - The pick up should float on the springs? Not screwed down tight??

yup, the pup floats on the springs...

huh if you screw it down it comes up ,lol
