Anyone here done any?

I have just finished four, and must say they are way better than the usual mini amps you can get commercially. Recently played in Chemnitz where I was forced to sell one by some members of the audience.

Were basicly built from KEMO kits with a speaker inside a Oliva box for the slim pantellas, or Casa del Alegria from Nicaragua/ Griffin from Do rep.

varying speaker sizes for the various boxes, 5 or 8 Watt all from a 9V battery.

Cost roughly 20-25€ to build.

Would be great to hear from others who have done something in that direction...

I built one from the GuitarFuel Artec kit, housed in a Rocky Patel "The Edge" box:

The kit cost about US$30, including shipping, and performs quite well. I don't think the output is 5-8 watts, though: more like 2.5 W.
Saw your pics and must say that the job you did is super.
Hope it sounds good.
keep an eye out on ebay for mini amps and micro amps sometimes you can get them for less than 20 bucks gut them and use the parts in a cba.
I have been using DIY kits from Kemo, which come in around 8€, plus the plugs and sockets, and a speaker bringing it up to maybe 20€
Works well with speakers up to 30W....
I got a fender min deluxe for $9.00 awhile back normally cost around $40. plus, plays pretty good can't afford only cheap amps maybe the tops would be $50.00
a good amp is worth saving some money for and you dont have to dump a tone of money for one either look at carvins vintage series i think they start at 300 for a all tube american made amp. you can't beat that.
I too picked up a couple of Fender Mini's back when they had that sale. They play ok, tho to me are a bit weak.Still very playable tho.
Now that I use AND SELL Honeytones , I'm hooked on them.Their not hard to sell, they sell about as fast as we get them by the case.
try hooking them to a 8 or 10" speaker they will suprise you the speaker is the big killer on a mini amp. not power.

I agree that the speakers are a big deal. I once hooked up a lil smokey (don't recommend them) to an orange 4X12 box and filled a medium sized room. Obviously you wouldn'd to this, but I have a micro amp with an output jack and works well with a 10 hobo speaker box.

the best,

Sam

Have to agree with this one. I have swithched to 5" and 6" speakers for the amps I have been constructing....

saw this post some time ago, but just now getting to where i'm ready to build some amps with 6" speakers - i have 3 speakers and thought i'd try 3 different amps - a ruby, minty and i thought about a kemo - did you just wire up the kemo ic or did you add more to the circuit? any other suggestions on amps? thanks in advance

I bought a Roland CM 30 which is technically a cube monitor that is phenomenal in terms of sound quality.  My daughter uses it for small venue gigs and for pure clean sound and no fx that weighs 11 pounds, vocals are better than you could hope for.  It sounds unplugged, but louder.  They retail for $200 and I spent $125 on ebay.

The only compromise with this amp is the size venue it can handle and lack of fx.
