Eye bolt tuners... as if there haven't been enough questions about them so far...

I am considering using eye bolt tuners on my next build. Can I use my cheap-o drill press to drill through an eye bolt? What type of bit should I use? I'm also considering just cutting a slot in the end of the bolt (similar to a bass tuner). Has anyone tried that before?

Your drill press probably can do it. What you might find, though, is that as you press down the drill bit wants to drift off the side of the bolt, being that it's cylindrical. So, if you have a decent center punch, find where you want the hole to go with it and smack it a few times, then a few more times for good measure. This will help to flatten out the point of entry.

I went to the hardware store and bought a titanium tipped drill bit for the task. I've been told titanium bits won't dull as quick, plus in case it did, I wouldn't be destroying one of the regular bits from my set.

Haven't tried the other method, although it doesn't sound like a bad idea either.
Here is my quistion....do they stay in tune real well? I never thought about using my grinder, gee....learn something new every day.....

Yeah, I tried drilling holes through, but never used a grinder to flatten things out, man, I May have to try that next build.
I had to drill out a set of conventional tuners because the holes didn't end up in the right place on the headstock I made.
That's what I did, used my Dremel to make a little flat spot, then centerpunched and used my drill press.

Eyebolts and similar improvised tuners are cool for their primitive authenticity...But I confess I've played "real" guitar so long I really appreciate smooth, accurate tuners...
My new axe, a Yamaha, has a built-in electronic tuner. Really handy.
Thanks for the help guys. Btw, those pics are awesome Scott. I love the way the first one worked out.
Great stuff!
But I have never come across a set of eye bolt tuners that can hold a tuning well, especially, as someone mentioned, with steel strings.
I wouldn't have tried them either, except that they seemed to work out well for this guy.

Seems he has just completed it, and I dig the enthusiasm he projects in the vid. Glad it worked out so well for him.
I would like to try the eyebolts again some time soon...

I came up with a design that is similar to the tuners on my Steinberger headless guitar. I have to use a needlenose pliers to tune, but once it's in tune, it pretty much stays there. In fact, I've been playing my CBG now for a week straight without having to retune.

This is a great idea. You could space them out a little more and use wing nuts so you could tune without the pliers.

Cool design! Inlining the picture here using the camera icon:

You my frieend, are a friggin genious!
Great tip , and as a steinberger user for many years, I can see exactly where you are comming from. I`ll try this shot from the bridge end....
