The Lumineers – The Lumineers (2012)

The Lumineers, a folk-rock trio out of Denver, Colorado, deliver an acoustic-based Americana sound that touches a lot of stylistic bases, from folk to gospel to heartland rock and the narrative end of country, all with interesting rhythmic twists and turns. The band had its beginnings in 2002 when Jeremiah Fraites lost his 19-year-old brother Josh to a drug overdose. Fraites and his brother’s best friend, Wesley Schultz, turned to music to deal with the sorrow of it, and were soon writing songs and gigging together in the New York area as a duo. After relocating to Denver, the pair met classically trained multi-instrumentalist Neyla Pekarek after placing a Craigslist ad for a cellist, and things clicked for the trio, who began playing open mikes at the Meadowlark, a basement club where local songwriters gathered, developing a fresh sound that defies tight classification, although front porch Americana might cover it — with a touch of gospel stomp tossed in. The Lumineers released a demo EP in 2009, following it with an eponymous EP in 2011. A proper first album, again simply called The Lumineers, appeared from Dualtone Records in 2012.

Rodriguez – Searching for Sugar Man [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (2012)

In the documentary Searching for Sugar Man, director Malik Bendjelloul looks back at two music fans’ quest in the early ’90s to learn the fate of ’70s singer/songwriter Rodriguez (born Sixto Diaz Rodriguez to Mexican immigrant parents in Detroit), musically accompanied by the Searching for Sugar Man soundtrack that collects tracks from his two albums. Growing up in South Africa, record retailer Stephen “Sugar” Segerman and music journalist Craig Bartholomew had a very different relationship with Rodriguez than folks in his native U.S.; while debut Cold Fact and follow-up Coming from Reality (released on the short-lived Sussex label in 1970 and 1971, respectively) attracted critical praise from the few press outlets they reached, commercially they went nowhere, seemingly dooming the artist to obscurity. But against all odds, a bootleg recording of Cold Fact made its way to South Africa, just as the stronghold of apartheid was growing, and Rodriguez’s anti-establishment storytelling, filtered through a psychedelia-tinged folk-rock lens, connected deeply with black Africans as well as liberal young Afrikaners. As word of mouth about the singer/songwriter spread, he became a South African sensation (naturally helped along when the government banned his records), eventually going not just platinum but also finding listeners holding him in the same artistic esteem as Bob Dylan and the Beatles. It wasn’t until the late ’90s that the artist — rumored to have committed suicide years before — would learn of his overseas fame, sparking a string of live dates abroad and awakening stateside interest. The Searching for Sugar Man soundtrack rolls together songs from Cold Fact (featuring kaleidoscopic production by Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore) and Coming from Reality, focusing on the most iconic songs in the Rodriguez discography, not only showing that the lyrics resonate decades later but reminding listeners of the transformative power of music. Signature song and nickname “Sugar Man,” which listeners may recognize as being sampled by Nas and Large Professor, is a piercing ode to drugs that elevates its simple lyrics with a trippy arrangement, opening with percussive, flamenco-like guitar and spacy Moog, and swelling with paranoid strings before drifting out to the ether. Conversely “I Think of You,” which also reached audiences decades later thanks to a cover by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., shows Rodriguez’s romantic side as he breezily reflects on a sweetheart. But his bread and butter are gritty tales of city life, whether calling out the signs of social corruption (“Gun sales are soaring, housewives find life boring/Divorce the only answer, smoking causes cancer/The system’s gonna fall soon, to an angry young tune/And that’s a concrete cold fact”) with “This Is Not a Song, It’s an Outburst: Or, The Establishment Blues”; encountering runaways on the side of the road on “Inner City Blues” (his own composition, not to be confused with the Marvin Gaye song); or verbally eviscerating hipsters at a dive bar in the Arthur Lee-meets-”Rocky Raccoon”-styled “A Most Disgusting Song.” Three bonus tracks that Rodriguez recorded with Coffey and Theodore in 1972 and which first appeared on the At His Best bootleg, including the vibrantly orchestrated artistic autobiography “Can’t Get Away,” are also collected here. Whether moved by the documentary or simply interested in a one-disc anthology of Rodriguez’s work, the Searching for Sugar Man soundtrack is a thoughtfully curated celebration of this devastatingly underrated artist

Chris Isaak - Beyond The Sun (2CD, 2011)
Beyond The Sun is a new album by Chris Isaak, released through Vanguard Records on October 18, 2011. It is a collection of songs originally released on Sun Records and recorded by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. The record itself was recorded at Sun Studio, Memphis, Tennessee.

Chris Isaak's longstanding desire to musically salute his inspirations was fast-tracked when he read a 2000 interview with the great Sun Records producer Sam Phillips that appeared in the Oxford American. Near the end of the Q&A, Phillips was asked if any contemporary recording artists grabbed his attention. His response blew Chris away. "I don't keep up with the business like I used to," said Phillips, "but I love to listen to Chris Isaak. He's very talented, and his music is so damned honest. It's incredible." That pretty much sealed the deal for this Sun worshiper. The accurately titled Beyond the Sun, Chris Isaak's Vanguard Records debut is a self-described labor of love. Since he fell in love with his parents' 45s as a child in Stockton, California, this passionate writer/artist has been obsessed with the glory days of Memphis' Sun Studio and the visionary artists who got their starts there--including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis--all of them discovered and nurtured by Sam Phillips. Now, at long last, Isaak magically recaptures the transformative brilliance of the classic sides cut by these greats at Sun with Phillips during the mid-'50s, while also getting down to the nitty-gritty of his own deeply rooted musical identity.

Zac Brown is a country singer, songwriter, and bandleader, one of the brightest stars in a generation of performers set on changing the paradigm of the country music business. He’s also a record producer, record label head, and philanthropist set on making the world a better place for as many people as possible. With his winning combination of country, bluegrass, reggae, and Caribbean music, he appeals to country fans and jam band hippies, and could well cross over to lovers of world music and pop.
The Zac Brown Band’s third major-label studio album, Uncaged, is the first with new member percussionist Daniel de los Reyes, and features guest spots from Amos Lee and Trombone Shorty, as well as songs co-written with Jason Mraz and fellow Southern Ground artists Nic Cowan and Sonia Leigh. Dropkick Murphys – Signed and Sealed in Blood (2013)

Signed and Sealed in Blood is the forthcoming eighth studio album by the Dropkick Murphys.
The album is due for release on January 8, 2013 on the band’s Born & Bred Records label. The album’s title comes from the lyrics of the first single, “Rose Tattoo”. The album is their second with producer Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Old Crow Medicine Show), which was recorded at Boston’s Q Division studios and mixed by Joe Chiccarelli.
Where Going Out in Style told the story of a fict- ional character named Cornelius Larkin — complete with an obituary written by Michael Patrick MacDonald for the liner notes — “Signed…” has no such constraints. “This is just the opposite of that,” bassist Ken Casey explains, “just us having fun and making the most catchy, singalong kind of songs we can. It’s not that the last album wasn’t fun. It was. ‘Going Out in Style’ is one of the records I’m most proud of, of anything we’ve done. But it gave me a couple migraines along the way, getting through that because everything was so connected. This time we cut loose.” But he does feel that “Signed…” is also “almost a continuation of (‘Going Out in Style’), in a musical sense. There’s an upbeat, party vibe to it. A lot of these songs, we were having such a good time writing them and just enjoying the writing process. It’s the quickest we’ve released an album, ever, after another.”

The group has been previewing some of the new songs during its Halfway To St. Patrick’s Day U.S. tour, which wraps up September 21, 2012 in Boston. Casey describes the final track, “End of the Night,” as “the closing time, kind of loser’s anthem, about people who don’t want to go home.” The album also features a holiday song called “The Seasons Upon Us,” which Casey promises “is definitely not some cheesy Christmas tune. It’s about a dysfunctional family.”

Jimmy Cliff – Rebirth (2012)

If the reggae legend’s 2004 effort Black Magic was like Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett’s Duets albums –late-era, star-filled, and somewhat flat — Rebirth is Jimmy Cliff‘s American Recordings (Johnny Cash) or Praise & Blame (Tom Jones), where a veteran artist goes raw and relights the fire with the help of a kindred spirit/knowing producer. For Cash and Jones, it was Rick Rubin and Ethan Johns respectively, while here it’s a bit of a surprise with Rancid frontman and Clash devotee Tim Armstrong delivering something well above the expected punky reggae party. “Guns of Brixton” is a natural, and Cliff’s take on Rancid’s “Ruby Soho” is a ska recreation to behold, but when the sometimes poptacular reggae singer dons a wild, Lee “Scratch” Perry persona for the carnival song “Bang” …(“I came into this life, I came in with a bang/I’m living my life, I live it with a bang”), deep reggae fan Armstrong knows what to do, surrounding his man Upsetter-style with a whirling dervish of ska while adding a searing guitar solo as well. When the singer gets nostalgic on “Reggae Music” (“1962, Orange Street, Kingston Jamaica/I sang my song for Leslie Kong, he said…”) the backing track is alive with that roots based magic and one drop power, yet Cliff’s the one who seals the deal here and throughout the album, performing like a young buck while packing his years and wisdom into the songwriting. On that front, there’s the Occupy Movement theme “World Upside Down” and the powerful single “One More”, while the sweetness comes from the sentimental “Ship Is Sailing”, a nautical metaphor so warm it could be slipped into a Jimmy Buffett set easily, even as the tinkling keyboards honor reggae legend Jackie Mittoo, thus nominating Armstrong‘s loving recreation as one of the most loved. It’s a return to form and just what fans of Cliff’s early work could ask for, but it’s vital too, putting it on the man’s top shelf, somewhere in the vicinity of The Harder They Come soundtrack and Wonderful World, Beautiful People.
