So I normally finish my necks with  Deft Clear Gloss -which I really, really like-.. dries fast, doesn't run, fairly durable, looks good...and did I mention fast? I guess I did. Anyway, my local supplier has been out of the stuff for weeks, so I finished a few builds with Deft Semi-Gloss instead. Not bad but, of course, not as shiny as my beloved Gloss.

I'm testing a couple of spray cans of different junk on some maple, walnut, & mahogany scraps right now. The first is Rustoleum Crystal Clear enamel (I'm already guessing this is gonna be a loser, but we'll see.) The second is Rustoleum clear Specialty Lacquer, which looks somewhat promising after 1c.

But, might lacquer be a lousy idea for a git neck for some reason?

Anybody used either of these on necks? Good results? Bad? Or should I just go out and scare up some more Deft in the next town over?

BTW, this is only for the necks, I use other stuff on my fboards ...and I'm not really innerested in Danish oil, or long Danish dry-times.

Me & my itchy spraycan-nozzle finger thank you in advance!

Deft IS lacquer.

Ahh that's right! thanks, Skeesix. I guess I'll start spraying some lacquer.

I've had good results with rattle can lacquer from Ace Hardware. The fast dry of lacquer allows it to be second coated quickly and I like the finish. I buff it out with fine steel wool between coats.

Thanks, Thomas. Lacquer it is. Fast is what I'm looking for.
I may be mistaken, but I always thought you weren't supposed to sand (or steel wool) between coats when applying a lacquer finish, since lacquer -unlike other finishes- doesn't really require any "tooth' to take multiple coats. I do sometimes give it a quick wipe/buff with a dry cloth between coats, to get rid of dust/residue but that's about it. Anyway, I'm bagging, taping, masking & getting ready to spray a batch of cbg necks & peg heads with lacquer.
