Make a 2-string Chugger from a 30" Canoe Paddle!

It's been a while since I've made an instrument in the workshop. I found this 30" paddle at a sporting goods store and decided to turn it into a 2-string chugger. I didn't really have a plan but it came together nicely.

Thanks AD. It came out pretty nice and there is definitely some Pixies influence in there. :-)

If you get a hankering to do it sometime, just let me know. I have more fishing line than I will ever use and will be happy to send you what you need. You can even do a super low G (a whole step below an A on a 4-string bass) with 400 lb test and a scale length around 32” !!!

Yeah. That's kinda what I figured. It might be a good use of a 4' paddle though. If you went with a 30" scale or something similar, it might work pretty well.

You are correct Kale, you need longer scale lengths for fishing line to get low notes. For a 25.75” scale length I would use 250 lb test to get a low G! A big downside of fishing line is it comes in 100 yd increments, a lifetime supply and then some.

Thanks John. I'm pretty pleased with it.

Fun vid.  Nice lil chugger!

I think fishing line string would have to be really heavy to work right with a short scale like this but it would be cool if I could incorporate that. It's a great idea. It might work on a 4 foot paddle.

Fun and simple project Kale! I enjoyed watching you pull it all together in a short yet detailed video. I gotta ask though wIth a canoe paddle where are the fishing line strings?  I do enjoy playing my chuggers, but fretted versions.

Thanks for checking it out t-belly and BrianQ. It was just a random idea but it seemed to work out pretty well.
