Cigar Box Amp 3/4 watt LM386-3 As seen at Makezine

I just got a load of parts in, and I built this as my first run to see how great a 4 inch speaker would sound at .75 watts. I also have something that I didn...

Make did a really good job of showing the breadboarding process of the circuit step-by-step. I like how the first page's drawing has a 6" speaker in the cracker box, yet it shows them installing a 2" speaker in the box. Go for 4". The 4" speakers really make some noise.

Here's the Make: Magazine's original Cracker Box Amp article if anyone needs it ... http://www.mediafire.com/?gv9psgs40r69pbm

Keep it 'Nation' ... if my link's posted elsewhere, I'll have to take it down .. cheers.

Here is my newly published Instructable. Let me know if I'm missing something or what you think.

@Barry,
Yes, I am working on an Instructable right now. Well, all day. I should have it finished by late tonight. I really want to make a video of me assembling one, but that would probably be about as fun as watching grass grow.

@Naz,
It would probably crank at 12 volts, but I would personally shoot for a regulated 12 volts since that is the max on the datasheet.

... also, i'd be interested to see how it sounded if you pushed it with 12v. Probably even better, I'm thinkin'?

That is impressive. Can you tell me if you have the sources for your parts, and a schematic or layout? I'd love to make one for my sepf and a friend. Cheers

@Naz
Your statement is correct. The typical output, according to the N.S. datasheet, is 700mW. The minimum output is 500mW. I used to use the LM386-1, and the datasheet shows this one only has a typical output of 325mW. I found that Jameco had the -3 and had to upgrade. I hope that this doesn't put me in the same category as some amp manufacturers. :0 I did round up to 3/4, which is 7% more than the datasheet says.

I thought the 386-3 was a ½watt chip? ... Sounds cool, and I see your roadie is working hard too :-))
