Thanks to Humidor Guitars for finding and posting this clip. I was called into Regal Pawn in Chester to look at and evaluate a guitar box guitar for The History Channel's new series. It was all a very interesting experience. Of course, the clever thing was the way they set up the filming and did the editing...I had no idea that the chap trying to sell the guitar had actually built it...they didn't tell me that bit in advance! It's all part of the schtick to try and inject a bit of liveliness into the production I suppose.

Fortunately, I tried to be diplomatic and on my best behaviour...but when the gentleman started getting very critical about the pickup in my guitar that I'd been asked to bring along for a quick comparision, the penny dropped that not only was he trying to sell it, but that he'd also made it. He really didn't like the fact that mine had got a nice custom made JuJu pickup in it instead of a piezo buzzer. Well, watch the clip thru' to the end see what money he wanted for it...and if he managed to sell it.

I hope if the maker is a CBN member it doesn't put him off. It was a nice looker though, so credit there! Interesting that the inside looked as though it had been lined with gold foil or was it brass sheet? Presumably not an attempt to cut out rf interference with a piezo. Hmmm... gold foil? I line mine with aluminium foil for RF interference, gold would look great! Brass sheet ( You can get some in modeling shops.) would be pricey but would also counter weight a cbg well?

It wouldn't have done anyone any good to have been brutal...but I did have to have a little chuckle at the "...but wouldn't it look nice on a wall though?". Errr, yes, that's why people call some guitars "wall hangers".  There's room for all sorts of cigar box guitars...but as I said, putting a price on them is hard...they are worth what people are prepared to pay.

Fair play to ya CBJ, You could have been really brutal...Its guys like this who give the good builders a bad name...typical of some of the overpriced un-playable trash you see on ebay.....At £350 It looks good enough to hang on the wall he said...Err no thanks mate, I'd sooner hang a dart board its cheaper and it plays.

Hey History Channel, the Cigar Box Guitar Museum is in New Alexandria, PA.  It moved out of York PA a decade ago.  LOL

To me appearance is 2/10 of the value. Playability is 100/10 of the value. Without playability an instrument is worthless to me.
