Sorry to hear of your health problems. I hope you make a total recovery soon.

I meant to ask, how does the hurdy gurdy sound and what problems did you have constructing the instrument and how easy was it to set up? Am I correct in assuming that notes are stopped or fretted by a kind of keyboard?

It's the kind of thing that I would love to build, but I know that I never will.

Ref 'bass' ukulele neck............

there are a number of things that helped in this construction. The neck is, compared with a normal bass, is very short; the hard wood, through the body design; the thick (ish) finger board and rose wood neck binding; and most importantly the relatively low tension of the "strings".

Hi Brian,
the cigar box ukulele 'bass' has a scale length of 50cm - 20 inches. Usual (ish) baritone ukulele size. The neck width at the nut is 35mm and at the 12th fret is 45mm.

Hi mate - just a quick link you might enjoy re: spinning reso cones. The video suggests that with the right material and know-how, spinning cones is childs play - without heat! Il be trying again tomorrow with some much thinner material, so Il keep you posted!
