Originally banjos were made by african slaves made from gourds that usually had calf skin stretched over them. As far as the stuff we build and call a banjo is concerned it can be confusing. For instance I built what I call a CBG Banjo from 2 cigar boxes to resemble a traditional resonator style banjo. Check my pics to see what Im talking about. Although by definition it isnt actually a banjo, I built it in the spirit of the banjo.

Hope your first build is doing good. I have currently got a brass box which I need to fit in a bigger box and then see how it sounds. The bug is caught.
currently the pick ups are on the base of the neck (you will see when I upload the pics, but I think I will play around a bit more. I will let you know what sounds best.

They were about 89p which is good because it doesn't matter too much when the wires snap off which seemed to happen to about three of mine. But thats probably more to do with my big fat clumsy sausage fingers! Buy spares is my advice!

I was only having a laugh, but your comments on northern soul and economically deprived areas having a shared experience and therefore being attracted to their culture really made me think. once you make your first CBG there will be no stopping you i have loads of hobbies but non are quite as addictive as this one
