Sorry to hear of your health problems. I hope you make a total recovery soon.
I meant to ask, how does the hurdy gurdy sound and what problems did you have constructing the instrument and how easy was it to set up? Am I correct in assuming that notes are stopped or fretted by a kind of keyboard?
It's the kind of thing that I would love to build, but I know that I never will.
there are a number of things that helped in this construction. The neck is, compared with a normal bass, is very short; the hard wood, through the body design; the thick (ish) finger board and rose wood neck binding; and most importantly the relatively low tension of the "strings".
Hi Brian,
the cigar box ukulele 'bass' has a scale length of 50cm - 20 inches. Usual (ish) baritone ukulele size. The neck width at the nut is 35mm and at the 12th fret is 45mm.
Hi mate - just a quick link you might enjoy re: spinning reso cones. The video suggests that with the right material and know-how, spinning cones is childs play - without heat! Il be trying again tomorrow with some much thinner material, so Il keep you posted!
We are all still awaiting a sound sample from that HG! It is so incredibly cool!

Believe me Brian, when Im limited to just 2 words, that IS speechless!!! hehe
Looks like a very involved build! Its certainly very eye catching... any chance of a sound demo?? I love this kind of experimentation, good work!
when you go to wcbn music should start to play right away. the music player is at the top of the page and there are 46 different artists on there. let me know if you need more help or ask the guys in the chat to help you find your way around. everyone here is generally pretty happy to help out.
Cheers Brian - I've been doing as you say and trawling thru the fotos...there are some awesome looking creations on this site, and I'malready starting to think 'what if I just...' which is a bad sign. Keep telling myself to keep it simple, better that way..
I just realised that it is your plans that I'm following for my first attempt - I'll apologise in advance for all the daft questions to follow..but thanks for making them available, they have already cleared a few things up for me

thanks Brian. if you take a good look at that pic again, or some of my others, you will see that those are colored toothpicks. the fretboard is slotted, the toothpicks are smashed in my vice then glued in... some day you should try your own pickups, not as hard as you might think. good luck brian and keep buildin and have fun.
Nifty! Well, if i run across any neat Bobbin stuff from the Lowlands, i'll send it along to you. I have at least one that i need to replace so i'll be on a Bobbin Mission.
Brian, that's incredible. I didn't really know what to think when you said you were a 'Bobbin Historian' but you weren't kidding. What an amazing collection! So, i'm assuming from viewing your collection that i used the Torchon bobbins.
Wow, a Bobbin Historian...neato! Well, i originally found the bobbins in a box at the second hand market in Rotterdam, Holland. Had no idea what they were at first but thought they'd be perfect for tuners. (They would have been perfect if i would have had a good taperer, but how it is now they're a bit unreliable...i'll be replacing them and tapering them correctly the next time) Anyway, turned out they were lace bobbins which i now understand are more common in Belgium. Now that i'm trying to find replacements i've realized that there are all kinds of lace bobbins and i'm still looking for the best ones. Besides making ones own tuners, they are the only 'light-wood', inexpensive alternative for tuners i've found.
Thanks for your note!
