dono about hipsters ,but if you got a beard your easy mistaken for one, the thing is made to real time immetate te  string ,picking strumming, and all other action on a guitar, it dont look shit, but ,then on the other hand it can be neat? did you hear or played it? yep the 12 string dobro is something aint it !!

Hello BrianQ ! its a Beechbox never used Beech ,but it susstains the sound verry well found it in a junkstore its a pen & pensel case (big) it was slightly decorated  added some bird (fantasy looks like a fasant) and flowers) but cut away most of it because of the dogbowl & f holes, the rezz is a dogbowl the cover is the most work(all rustfree steel) its a drain roster ,flatten the edge,cut away two parts to leave a tee over the bridge  on the dogbowl( copper bent treadend ,susstains the sound better then a wood disc) and the string holder is again a lemon sqeezer(for tee) flatten bent& drilled, thats about it! thats about the story on the box Brian ! kind Greeetings A.D.

Thanks for the tip on the DiDario's flat wound i cant get them localy but  only online, but i got THOMASTIK-INFELD flatwounds  From austria they come for Jazz Swing Archtop guitars they are not cheap got them here for 16.50 in euro's and they are the strings i need for my dobro ,done some tracks yesterday Killer sound !!
