Legend tells that Tom Dula (the Tom Dooley of balladry) served in Colonel Zebulon Vance's 26th North Carolina, and  that he played the banjo for the Colonel. This is actually false. He served in Company K in the 42nd North Carolina Infantry Regiment...  but was known to be a fiddle player.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention Oily. The Civil War has been called the most musical war in history .  JEB Stuart had his own banjo player who travelled with the troops - and many other informal music groups formed in the camps. One of the songs on the compilation you mentioned was a melancholy one called "Lorena" The Generals forbade it to be sung because so many soldiers deserted after the song brought waves of homesickness. I'm with Unc a cigar box compilation.

Looks good, give or take a few artists. That would probably be Cowboy Jack Clement's last recording as well.
