I sold my first instrument

It is gone.  I'm a little excited and a little sad.  I really liked it and I was not planning on selling it today, but someone saw it, played it and pulled out cash.  What's a girl to do?

I am now in a frenzy to build its replacement and I have one Punch box.  I think I'm going to try for 3 at the same time and finish in a month.  9353755475?profile=original

  • The entire fingerboard is maple including the position dots and fret lines (which are maple veneer inlet into saw kerfs). The tiny dots on the edge of the fingerboard are filled with black epoxy putty.  I liked this instrument so much that I'm going to make another similar but maple neck and not poplar.  I used the same theme as the neck/fingerboard on the bridge but I'm still uninspired on bridge design.  It's something I'm searching for, my own identifiable bridge shape, but til I find it I'll be generic.  305789152?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

  • how cool!! and what unique idea ,, makes it look bound ,, no wonder it waltzed out the door !!

  • Richard, The fingerboard looks bound but it isn't.  It is straight grain maple stained black with one light coat of black lacquer and 4-5 coats of precat clear.  The fingerboard was wider than the neck so when I took the width down I exposed the unstained maple and sealed the edges with clear precat.  That's the same thing going on with the bridge.

  • Really   really like the edging u put on there   .. can i ask how u did that ?

  • I got 3 of those boxes ,, didn t think they were very good ,, just completed one couple 3 days ago ,, like Ms Charlotte ,, just kinda slung it together ,,,   it lights up my life ,, I keep it hid so don t have to offer it for sale  !!!!

Gonna take some pains with the others

  • Well, no wonder, look at that thing!!

  • Charlotte,

Keep making more so-called "crap." Your busy work is incapable of not reflecting your personality and attention to detail. I bet if we gave you a straw, some thread, and postage envelope, you could make it look and sound good. Nice work.
  • That is a beauty.

I have a hard time letting them go.  Too good, not good enough, the guy won't play it, etc. etc.  But a bit after they are gone, I adjust.

  • Thanks for the great replies guys!  I hate that it's gone and was thrilled that it sold so easily.  It started out as busy work and not wanting to use my better wood or nicer boxes and turned into my favorite thing I've built so far.

  • Well done!
