I am making a guitar for a friend form a 1930s tin they have supplied, and I do not want to cut into the top and spoil it, the tin is 12 inches long. I need help on 2 points, please.

1. I am having trouble with getting the right size slot for the frets. i have tried a number of different saws which type  is best?

2. Not sure on the tuning.
