The Schireson Brothers Resonator

I've talked to some before about the Schireson Flywheel. Well this morning I'm building one and I'm posting pictures of it in detail. It is in my opinion a great alternative to a biscuit bridge for 6 inch cones.

Note: I use a Tri-Cone replacement cone (left) instead of the standard biscuit cone. For one, it comes in a 3 pack, and it is deeper than a biscuit cone. …

It has been a while, but I'm trying to come back to CBN

Hey everybody,

Success does have it's cost. For me it has been not having the time to devote to the Forums as I would like.

It is my desire to Inspire and encourage builders to push the limits of their creativity. Even now, I learn with every instrument I make, and I focus on improvements.

I tell you from experience, do not settle for the easy way. Avoid taking those short cuts, and enjoy the Journey. Hone your craft, learn the History, and practice, Practice,…

Update on the Status of G.S.Monroe Folk Music

This Blog Post is intended to catch up on the events in my life over the last few years (I see that 2017 was my last Blog). There has been a lot of changes.

1) Contrary to Rumor, I'm still building Cigar Box Guitars. After all the 3 string is my "first Love" in the stringed instrument world.

2) My Business has grown International, with sales in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Ukraine, Sweden, Norway, Australia, and yes, even Hong Kong. I credit this success…

Pro Tip - Floating Blade Bridge Action

Anyone that has followed my builds or seen my instruments will know that I'm a huge fan of "floating blade" style bridges combined with a "Zero-Fret" string guide/nut. I have found this combo to be one of the most consistent ways to achieve low string action. I'm going to now share with you one of my secrets to how I make my floating bridge the correct height.

I use a simple wedge feeler gauge. I locate where the bridge will sit on the soundboard, and slide the feeler gauge under the…

Keeping it "Old School"

I've recently had a major change of direction in my builds. I've turned away from the shiny graphics and modern electronics, and I've headed back to the roots of Cigar Box instruments. I'm talking Vintage Antique boxes. Example; my latest build, a Vintage Harvester Ukulele. Starting with a depression era, "NRA Stamp" box, and a hand carved set neck. No Electronics, just simple old fashioned acoustic sweetness.

I've just about given up on through neck builds. A through the box neck…

Rocky Patel Cigar Box 4/4 Cello Project - Part II

Back for Part II

While my project was drying, I quickly sourced & ordered a pair of Rocky Patel 15th Anniversary boxes, the ones with the big pewter plate inlay in the lid.

I removed the plate inlay, and cut me some "RP" scroll head medallions.…

Rocky Patel Cigar Box 4/4 Cello Project - Part I

  "Once upon a time..."

I was recently vending at a Folk Festival when a customer came up and asked me if I was up for a challenge. He explained that he was a double bass / washtub bass player with a folk group that was playing on stage at the event. He told me that he had approached the other Cigar Box Guitar vendor ( there were two of us at the event ) with this project, and the guy turned him away, so he asked if I thought I was up for the challenge.…
