I have started a CBN group entitled, "How to Play CBG" It is my hope and intention to encourage the "Wealth of Talent" here on the Nation to share their knowledge and skill to further the CBG movement. Please consider contributing an instructional "video" link to this group. If you are a viewer seeking instruction, please feel free to write. If you have any suggestions or know other players who you think may want to post instructional "video" links, please contact me. Thank you for your interest and support, Keni Lee
yeah i did make all them CBG's , just gonna start another Commision build , but this ones not like my others it's going to be whats known on here as a Rat Rod - like kinda used and abused sort of looking it's going to be a first for me but i'll give it a try !
i can tell your well into the CBG thing it sure gets you like that your right it's a Awesome hobby indeed - like no other hobby i've had before - i never tire of talking and building these little instruments and sharing with all the other guys and gals on here
hope to see more more cracking builds from you mate
take care now accross the big pond
juju.
for neck thru.start at 36" at least a 1" x 2".measure up 1" for the box bottom and thenmark the neck for the box top.rout about1/8"inch deep for box top to fit into(about an inch at top and bottom of the inside of the box) this gives you a place to connect the box top to the neck, then take out another 1/8"in between so the top can float.measure up 27 to 28" from box bottom for your tuner rout.rout or cut 1/8th to 1/4" to allow tuner depth.I always use a 3/4 round router bit to round out the back of my necks.its much more comfortable to play.do not rout the rounded neck into the box.its easier to cut a square than fit the box to a round neck.
I always glue all seams inside the box with wood glue to strengthen.or install wood bracing.(too much bracing will kill volume)All boxes sound different.deeper boxes have more volume.wood boxes with dovtailed corners are usulally louder than particle board top paper covered boxes. keep your tuners within a string length of the bottom. drill holes or affix your bridge at bottom and install a piece of metal (nail, cotter pin) just inside string holes to avoid cut thru.I install #4 washers or nuts under to keep strin gs from cutting thru the bottom of the neck.
i like 1/4" nut material and grind 1/16th grooves for strings.I use 5/16th bridge material for height at the box. This is for slide not frets.Aluminum works good because you can work it easy and it transfers loud to the box and neck.
A dremmel with a diamond cut blade works pretty good for box cutout.
look at others soundholes for your preference but remember too big will kill volume and tone. my multi hole flower style design is my favorite for volume and tone. I use around a 3/4 in the middle then a 5/16 and a 3/16 for the 4 outer holes.
The best part about this is you learn your own tricks as you go.and you learn from your mistakes.Maybe you should build with a couple boxes your not partial to first to get your comfort level up before you get into that box your partial too.You will end up building more than 1.so dont screw up your favorite box on your first attempt.
Finishing, I use 3 to 6 coats of poly with 400 grit sanding in between coats on my necks.and I usually spray the box with clear Krylon a few times. with very light coats to make sure you dont stain or make dark spots on the stickers.poly never seems to stick to the boxes unless they are raw unfinished wood.
almost neccesary tools needed.
router (or bandsaw)
orbital sander with speed control if you can
round file (bout the size of a bic pen)
triangle file (bout the same size)
Irwin quick grip clamps.
Large exacto knife
drill
i found a good phillips head screwdriver at lowes that does all size screws.itrs great for tuner install time.cause it has a full size handle instead of a lil dinky pocket sized one.
tiny drill bit for tuner screws (always predrill or you will strip them) 1/16
5 or 10 minute epoxy to attach box to neck/nut to neck
Everybody in here uses different methods and tools.some people use no more than a drill and do all thier work on thier bedroom floor.others have workshops with all the stuff.spend a couple weeks reading thru the educational rooms from the main page to find the ideas you like best. you will thank me later if you take that advice.
most all of these guys in here will help you out.And Ted crocker is a goldmine of information on everything related.
I hope this quick reference helps you out in areas. My stuff aint perfect I just needed help with sizes when I was new.and this site wasnt available to me at that time.I sure wish it was. as long as you think about what you do as you go the mistakes should be minimal with the help at the nation.
I cant stress enough to use another box or two before you get into that box your partial too.
I went for three strings, but 4 would work fine.
