Winding on a sewing machine

First time winding a pickup. I replaced the bolt connecting the flywheel of the machine with a longer bolt holding in place a metal plate with magnets glued onto it. The bobbin is held in place by the magnets - which are really strong! I guide the wire by hand and control the speed with the foot pedal

  • dont some sewing machines have counters?

there used to be an electric circuit counter you can get at maplins that uses a light trigger being broken to count

maybe this could be an addtion?

what about modifying this? (the in 1 direction version is even cheaper)

there was a chap on youtube who used a modified calculator to count his windings..

I need to crack this as I need a pickup winder.... now let me think......

  • There is no easy way to know the number of winds with this method. I was wondering about using a bicycle milometer/odometer or something and figuring out how to convert miles to winds. Or i could try working it out roughty by weight. It might be better though if i just stopped regularly to measure resistance. The first and so far only pickup I've made like this had a disappointingly low output.
  • Very nice!
I just ask myself why I turned down an old sewing machine some days ago, just because i can't sew. I have to start thinking!
  • Beautiful. Do you need to know the exact number of times the wire is wound?
  • Cool! I loved my sewing machine before, but this opens a whole new dimension!
  • Very cool, creativity at its finast.
