Two-string dulcimer 2 002

Cabin fever project, started as a yardsale jewelry box of some dense fine-grained mystery wood with good tone. Coupled with an old tool handle. The fred board is 1/4 by 1 inch strip of teak scrap. I glued it to the top of the handle and then addeed 1/4" dowels on each side. The profile feels good in the hand. Brass rod at zero fret, coat hanger wire for other frets. Bridge is a biscuit joint wood wafer with brass rod. Gitty piezo and parlor tuners. Ernie Ball #30 and 16 strings tuned to D and A. The frets are set up like the diatonic scale on a dulcimer, easy to pick, no sour notes. Raven is internet clip art, printed on paper and glued to back. Top finial and strap button are drawer pulls. I used Titebond glue, acrylic paints and shellac seal and finish inside and out. This box surprised me with it's volume and resonance, fun to play and I'm keeping it.

  • Thanks Uncle John. Interesting how the pictures I posted showed up in reverse order.
  • Ah.  Comment first then read or listen.  Story of my life.  Good description.  A dulcimer or strum stick fits this build even better.

  • A very large and appreciative WOW!   I like CBGs, diddleys, home-made, birds and especially ravens and crows.
