I'm going to strip out the paper and am looking at shielding the box and adding re-enforcing in the corners. Although I will say that this cardboard box is more sturdy than my last wood box (That is already splitting at the seams from the pressure of the strings. This has made me re-think my design. I am now planning to have the strings go through the neck to the back. My hope is to get the box to "float" and all the stress of the strings should ride on the neck.
