The head

The nut is temporary. It started off far too high, went far too low and now has many layers of paper under it.

  • Hi John.

    No formula that I know of, although I have read methods of setting it using coins to gauge the gap. I think most of it is personal. You don't want the strings to touch the fingerboard when using a slide, but you want to be able to press them down easily enough when fingering. It's also going to depend on the gauge and tuning of the strings as well as personal playing style.

    I'm sure you will find plenty of opinions on this in the forums.

    All the best.

    John

  • Thats a great point ... how do you know ehen the nut is the right height and set up properly, is there a special mathamatical way of working it out ...Pye squared etc lol
  • Hi Steve. Actually it still has the temporary nut on but this was my first and I move on to other things before doing the final things that I had planned. This just has cheap inline tuners from eBay (three all in one piece). I have used individual ones for the next two. Still have the other inline set of three so they will probably surface on something in the future.

    My third one is getting all the playing at the moment, so the first two are rather neglected.

  • Neat job, John - hope you got the nut sorted ok. I tried this type of inline arrangement on my latest build with a scarf joint  - trying to cut out the main slot with a fret saw through oak took a lot of time and snapped three blades in the process....have two tuners one side and one tuner on the other, though i see by the way your strings have been wound that was uneccessary...living and learning! (-;
  • Thanks a lot George. I used inline tuners so it makes it rather long but it works well enough. All the best.
  • I like the slotted look. I've been thinking about trying that for a while.Really nice.
  • Excellent work, beautiful.
