Thanks for the wonderful comments! The spider is cut with a water jet out of cold rolled steel, I've been using paint can lids for about 14 years now. I only started using the spiders recently. i found the steel lids have a much tighter and bell like sound. There's also some modifications inside which increase the sustain and adds the "zing".
