Quaker Maid oil can

Here goes nothing! This will be my first shot at an oil can guitar. I picked up this beauty at the swap meet in Canfield Ohio. The 83 year old man claims to have a collection of 189 cans at his house. If this one turns out good, I'll be looking for him again next year. Any words of wisdom for this build will be greatly appreciated!

  • Thanks for the advice guys. I'm not sure when I'll be working on this one, but wanted a head start on the ideas. I'll definitely be posting pics!
  • A lot of character in the Tin, so wouldn't try over cleaning it, agree with the previous comments by my two learned friends Pick & UJ, plus a through neck and a sound post like a Violin usually solves the metal bending problem.

  • if using  a mag pup. keep  pup and jack off the tin , separate jack with rubber washer  etc ,, otherwise you risk  making the whole can  a piezo sounding mag .

  • Good find.  The mild problem that occurs is when the metal bends in from body pressure as you play it. I will be interested to see what you do.  There is no great place for a mag pup.   You could neck mount one.   I will be interested to see what you do.
