My long-term supplier of necks- or bench slats as they prefer to call them- now offers poplar too. These are the first I bought, a bit easier to work than Sapele, and much easier to cut free slots in manually. One problem did present itself though- my white filler fret markers would be no good here, so I used 12mm screws instead (I now have brown filler, so next time...) and a pencil dot on the side of the neck.
