Pickup Hand Winder

Homemade winding "machine" made from my grandfather's old hand grinder and some shop scraps. I've just wound sewing bobbins so far, but I can easily adapt it to 3 or 4 pole pickups. This works great for making a few finely crafted pickups for my own use, its just not a mass production kinda' machine. I also found the wire coil holder in the inset worked better for me than having the wire feed off the end on the coil, which seemed to put a twist in the wire...

  • I took out all the electric grinders from our pottery due to the risk of a wheel breaking and flying around the shop. The hand grinder is no problem as you spin it yourself at a safe speed. Good tool.
  • You're right Dave. I inherited one from each grandfather. This one became a pickup winder. The other clamps easily on my bench and I have 6+ grinding wheels and also some other wire brushes  and sanding pads that can be quickly switched out - very handy!

  • I've used one of those grinders for pottery for many years. Good tool! Good use!
