You are right about the markers. The closest guitar I had to a L.P. is an Epoch (student model). It was a nice guitar but only had 1 tone and volume knob with a 3-way switch. I ended up selling it, but I sure miss it.
LOL...I've never really thought much of the markers. They're rather gaudy compared to the dots on the Fender necks. But, they're what makes a Les Paul a Les Paul. I've thought many times about trading it in on a Les Paul Standard ($3,000+), but it sounds so powerful. I'm just afraid I won't get another guitar that sounds so good.
