  • Hi Frank, yes better make the base plate from iron tin. It's like in a transformer - the magnetic field passes the iron.
  • Thanks John. It's about 1 3/4 by 2 1/2. I made the plate out of copper, but next time Im going to try tin or something so the magnets will stick to it and create more magnetic field. Maybe bigger magnets too. I wound 2500 turns on each side, opposite direction. When I finished winding the first side, I taped the wire to the back of the plate so I could flip it and wrap in the opposite direction on the other side. My goal is to get one small enough to stick inside a zippo. Got the magnets from ebay, super cheap for a lot of magnets, and many sizes to choose from. It sounds pretty good for a first-time try. Thanks for asking.

  • Looks good to me.  Any construction details?  Overall size, plate size, windings and direction?
