I tried cotter pins on my can-jo and was dissapointed. They kept coming off when I was leveling and crowning them. I don't use crazy glue, I use weldbond or JB Weld. The inlaid wire seems to work good. I have an order in with a local guitar builder for some medium/medium fret wire the next time he buys a batch. Thanks for the picture, your burnt wood markers are cool! Try shearing the stainless steel cotter pins with a flat faced cold chisel rather than cutting them.
I used 3/32" brass cotter pins, they look really sharp. But I"d use epoxy rather than crazy glue, mine kept popping off. Here's a pic, these were the zinc coated ones. Stainless steel are really, really hard to cut:
I think I'll stick with the purple heart for the fretboard. I don't have any gold tone fret wire or any other fret wire, so I'll probably inlay some brass wire into the neck and glue them into place. My glued in coathanger wire frets seem to work and hold well on my tenor quitar.
