Interesting, I use aluminium nuts on my guitars but I hadn't thought of screwing them in that way (with my arrangement I think it would be difficult to get the strings spaced so closely). I presume that when you say the screw broke you mean that the head came off leaving the threaded bit in the wood - sounds like just bad luck with a flawed screw. Your design looks fine to me - very elegant in fact.
