HurdyFiddle

  • UPDATE

I am surprised at how slowly you can turn the wheel and make this thing sing!  It does help to figure a way to strap it to yourself or hold it down while you crank though.

I have found that you can lay it on your lap and fret the strings like a lap steel and it works pretty well.

I believe this would sound might nice in the hands of a fiddler who knew their way around a one of these critter.

The mechanism is really not that difficult if you want to keep it simple.  I just couldn't help myself and went a little overboard.  You can see the very simple way the Dennis Havlena did it right here :

I think he made his for like $5 or something ridiculous.  I'd love to see what other folks (and good players!) could come up with on this unique little instrument!

  • I need a mechanism like that..

  • Nicely made !

  • sweet!

  • That's pretty neat Gene. I don't know if I could play one of those, it's kinda like trying to rub your tummy and pat your head at the same time. Thanks for sharing the video.
