Guess who's coming to dinner?

This is black stain, not black lacquer. The lacquer is going to be clear and near the end I may add just a hint of gold powder to give a very subtle highlight to connect with the brass and label.

  • John, it does feel great in the hands already.  I have about 6 or 7 coats of pre cat lacquer on it already.

Hal, I used Mohawk black penetrating stain http://www.mohawk-finishing.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictNbr=178 It comes in quarts and gallons and it is a dye stain.  You can see through dye stains, they are transparent color. Inside this neck looks jet black but in the sunlight I can see the wood under the color.  I applied the stain3 times then sprayed 3 coats of clear lacquer and sanded everything smooth and put more stain on to color where I had sanded through and then sprayed 4 more coats on.  I'll sand it with dry Norton 3X 400 grit tomorrow and stain and spray another 4 coats.

I'm at a loss for how to embellish the peghead.  It really needs something.

  • Like it!  I need to do a couple of black necks for some Partagas boxes.  Found a new local source for some rock maple so I'm back to building.  What brand/formula stain are you using?

  • Nice lines and color.  Gonna feel nice in the hands.
