GK Canjo 1, pic 4

Decided to change the typical can on it's side to an upright, feed the strings through onto an altoid tin with piezo glued to the top of the tin. Nice for both hearing acoustically and also for placing mic on a boom stand right at the top of can, mixed with pickup via an amp there are more tonal possibilities.

  • Glad to be any help possible Alan! Mine is a piezo disc inside of a "Altoids Smalls" tin which is used for the bridge inside. I love the ideal (and will do more with it) of using little tins as a combo bridge/pickup for these gits and basses (with round weed-wacker line for fretless bass). So that's what I used for that one.

  • I meant tuning, not timings. :)
  • Thanks for the reply! I will search for the notes, timings, etc. I originally saw the one Luthar had so I did a mad search looking for something similar, google, the Nation... Yours was the only other one I could find that was even close! Was it a piezo rod or disc? Great stuff. Enjoy your tour. Thanks again, I greatly appreciate it.

  • Hi Alan,

Well, my hearing isn't pristine anymore but it sounds great to me- then again, piezo and plugged into an amp rocks in any case, and also this 2 stringer includes a bass string and a med.-heavy guitar string (don't recall the tuning to be honest and I'm on tour in NY state at the moment so can't check) so it sounds full and big. Slide only. I do think the upright can (as I said in the notes) gives that option of mic'ing it as well, and it's meant to be played in one's lap, or on a table top or keyboard stand anyhow, so the player gets the added sound up out of the actual can, not the audience. Now, I did put a little string on it (for a strap) and you -can- hold it up like a normal slide guitar, in which case the can opening points outward to where the peeps would be... but it'd have to be a small room for it to carry far I think, without amplification. Give it a go and see. As you know, there are SO many variables you just can't tell how these things will sound until you build and listen. Have fun Alan! -Glenn

  • Hi Glenn,

Was checking out you canjo with the upright can. How did this work out? I recently saw a video of Luthar Dickenson (North Mississippi Allstars) playing an instrument with similar shape, etc. His sounded awesome. Was hard to see how his was made though.
