  • So, you use a slightly larger fret AS the nut or do you just slot the nut in such a way that it only guides the strings onto the fret for the right height?
  • Yup,  look at a store bought guitar,  The nut is barely above the fret board and the strings sit half way seated in the slots and half way out.  The bone nuts are highly regarded, but I think tough to get right.  My recent easy way out is to use a zero fret.  The nut is slotted and I use a jumbo fret there and mediums for the rest.
  • Thanks. The nut is something I really don't have much of a grasp on yet. I think i'll be making it not quite so tall on my future builds. My first builds used a bone nut and they tended to have a buzzing rattle that took alot of working to fix.

  • PS:  I like the stap and that is a good photo with the old chair and leather jacket.  I bet you could redo the photo with a neutral background and have a frame worthy photo.  Might be also be cool in black and white or sepia.
  • Looks really nice, Jason.  Some of the 'experts' say the strings should not sink so far into the nut.  If it plays and sounds good without annoying buzz, you are home free.
