It sounds pretty hot, kinda like a slide banjo/canjo depending where on the face that you pluck it. I found that the preamp adds some punch and I can bring out some needed bass tones. Straight through an amp it sounds a bit tinny, but without any amplifications it sounds pretty rich. I bolted a smaller film can lid to the inside back which seems to add a bit more resonance.
