Oak neck through (dowel stick) fit into a square hole in the vintage Munising dough bowl. I've add a block fit to the bowl and the neck through. It's glued to the bowl but the neck slides through. Three sound holes where the bowls feet were.

I like the tambourines. They are light, cheap, wood, glueable and easy. I've seen some fabulous clay instruments in a big book. From Mud To Music. Check it out.
Cool Dave. I've thought about a banjo with a clay pot. Of course it would have to have the neck opening designed in before firing. I don't have the skills or equipment to do that but I bet there are some banjo players out there who know a little about working with clay!
I do love your banjoWitch Pick. That is a way to get the scin on without pounding tacks. Sort of a tambourine bowl sandwich. I am liking the thick skins Jim. Very comfortable for your wrist in play. And a softer deeper tone. Mostly it's what I have on hand. I'm using hides I've had meant for clay drums that I got 20 years ago. At long last, using them.
Ah yes....a buried treasure! I've used opaque calf skin before that gives a hint of what lies beneath. I like the sound of thicker heads tho' . It looks like you've found how different head thickness can give you a different sound!
Sorry Jim. Your vision's blurry on this one. I don't much care for the clear plastic heads. The soda bottle head is great but I don't know how yet. I'm still trying to get the tack head hide head figured out. Each one teaches me a lot. The painting will still be there saved for the next picker to discover.

would be great if you could find a large dry/ aged goatskin tambo as a lid .

Looks hand painted. I'm definitely seeing it with a head that will leave the painting visible.
