Doral Across America Radio/Amp Conversion

My wife bought this radio during the summer at an auction, it is a Doral cigarettes promotional radio. I did some research and if you smoked 375 packs of Dorals you got this radio. It was manufactured in 1996 and is a 10 watt am/fm cassette model. Fairly easy hack as it has a cassette player so I hack onto the head leads. Radio and cassette work as they should and it sounds really good with some growl on the high volume end when playing git.

  • Thanks John, it's not a real hard conversion. It sounds pretty good, got a nice bit of growl when you crank it up yet crisp bass tone at lower volumes. I started working on a old Newcomb portable phonogragh conversion last night, it should really sing out as it has a 12" speaker and a 55 watt amp to push it. It came from the old Trinity Luthern Church in Fremont. From the 1940's or 50's I'm guessing.

Yeh I saw the clocks, they're pretty cool. One of the guys that works at Ted's Tobacco (where I get a lot of my boxes) in Omaha builds and gives them to friends and as gifts.

  • Great.  Especially that it still functions as a radio and a cassette.

Did you see the cigar box clocks Gitty is selling?

  • Oh and a Happy New Year to you Dave!

  • Thank you Dave! No cigs for this Maddog, only an occasional stogie for me.

Mind blowing thing is that whoever did buy 375 packs of smokes to get this radio spent around $1,500 to have enough proofs of purchase for the radio. I'd say Doral came out the winner on that promotion :-/

  • Now that's a pack a day for sure. Only a maddog would smoke that many cigs. Nice looking rig Maddog. Classy! Happy New Year.
  • Thanks James, as you can see it is winter here and cold as heck. I've been digging through the to do pile coming up with previous purchases to work on, start the wood burner, light up a cigar and start building stuff. The ONE good thing about winter :-)

  •  nice !!!  i could have had me a few of those
