  • Cool Dano, I'll bust up some wall warts and try a few more. Yours will probably end up thicker, but I'm hoping that wire is faster and easier to work with.

  • Thanks, Rick. If it is something important, I perform best at 2 beers/hour (preferably IPAs). I just have to get myself psyched into a sedentary mode and maybe add pair of ibuprofen for my rheumatic fingers. Hey, this could be a good new activity to keep my fingers moving (!), per Dr's orders...

Also (always thinking), I decided I am going to call my (future) slim pups "Sail Cat Humbuckers".  A "sail cat" is  a dried up and totally flat cat that has spent a few weeks/months lying in the road & getting flattened by autos & trucks. It can then be picked up and thrown to sail like a  Fisbee (R) or a kite with a furry tail... Sort of a way to avoid any implied connection to the fine commercially made and/or patented type(s) of thin pickups (pups) that are carefully crafted by folks who make a living by selling them - Respect!

  • Yeah Dave, I was curious about these.

Hey Dano, most important thing I forgot, this takes a while, so make sure you're comfortable, got something to drink, etc. It's simple, just tedious.

  • Nice Rick. I love the slim pups.
  • Thanks, Rick. I saw  onestringmusic.blogspot.com already. I'll be winding later this week on my first try.  I'll try to keep count of my wraps...  and report back.

  • Hey Dano, I think you want 400 wraps per side. The wire I used is probably 4-5 times finer than what I saw in the picture of the wire from the wall wart, so I wrapped until it was as high as the magnets. You might want to try and count, you will have better results , I think. I went to  onestringmusic.blogspot.com . I already had the magnets, Home Depot has em', 1/4" round x 1/8" tall neodyium.

  • Thanks, Rick. I got my busted up wall wort coils of fine wire ready. There are so many detailed specs from serious pickup winders out there & I've been a bit confused as to how many wraps, what size magnets, etc (I think too much sometimes)...

Your answer is authentically CBG in the best way:

not too pretty, but it sounds good

    and

I didn't even try to count

Best way to go, I think!

  • Hey Dano, I didn't even try to count. The wire is thinner than silk. I spent over an hour winding each side. I was pretty surprised that it actually worked.

  • Nice, Rick.  How many winds per side?

  • The wire has a coating on it, it needs to be sctatched off the ends when soldering leads to it, I wouldn't consider it insulated, though.  I mounted it in a box, and it definitely will need to be grounded to the strings. I was holding it by the corners when I tested it, so I was grounding it.
