  • Sorry for the late reply! Thanks for the comments all! The crackle is a tricky thing. With much experimentation this is what works for me. Crackle paint from the store is expensive and I don't think it works any better than my method.

    Step one: Lay on a thick layer of wood or elmers glue. Let it thicken slightly, but it should still be wet for the second step.

    Step two: lay on (lightly) a thick layer of tempera paint. Tempera paint is inexpensive and is not elastic like acrylics. It really gives you the crackle look.

    Step three: Dry the paint for a more crackle look. The reason for the crackle is the top layer of paint dries before the glue. I like to use a hair dryer to increase the effect. Don't forget to use contrasting colors to make the crackle really pop or similar colors for a more subtle effect.

    Step four: Touch up missed areas with a brush. Tempera paint is a bit fragile. I user a thin layer of poly over the top to hold the paint down and to seal things up.
