Leveling up the scarf joint at the drill press so the holes go in right. Only about a half inch of nail is used to keep the joint from slipping downhill while clamping up the glue joint. You must not put the nail anywhere that more wood needs to come off.

    You can certainly do that too, just be sure you get it all lined up quickly before the glue starts to grab.
  • I like this method, I might try it with a hardwood pin instead of a nail, that way there is no concern about striking it with a cutting tool.
