Can't rout a neck pocket? Build one.

Because this is going to be a cat-bowl reso it can't be a neck-through. But luckily, this old tobacco box's inner depth happened to be a perfect 1.5 inches. So I took some red oak 1x2 and built a neck pocket. Not only will it hold on to the neck on 3 sides but it also adds structure to the box.Got some shims that'll give the neck a nice back angle too.

  • Joined the neck last night. fit like a glove. 4 sides now have a glue joint and I'll add some screws tonight for additional hold, though I think that'll be overkill. I stacked 2 shims from a standard package and the back angle is quite nice. Probably a bit more than most people use but it works and will help keep some nice pressure on the bridge.

  • I was wondering if I could do something like that. Thanks for the idea.
  • Actually, it'll hold on to the neck on 4 sides
