Box and parts for CBB project

30" Short-Scale Bass with LaCuesta "Ambassador" display case for body, 1960's Vox-style neck and cello-inspired headstock. I'll be making my own "doodle bass" strings with grommet ball-ends. Fishman MKAB bass piezo and preamp will be fitted. The LaCuesta box is 17x9x3. She's old, and a little weather-beaten. My 3/8th steel rod is in the slot.

  • Rick,

The rod isn't threaded - just a 3 8ths from OSH. I suppose an adjustable arrangement is for my next level of ambition, but I still like to keep things within the realm of simple hand tools, sitting on the front yard...

The neck is through-the-body, so I am running this from nut to tail piece. If I had to choose again? I'd select a square, hollow steel one - less chance to twist than round. I was more worried about bowing. As is stands, my neck-slot is about 3 32nds too small, for such a square rod. To route this out now risks removing too much wood, and is trickily precise, without proper table tools...

As is stands, I have a ridiculously thick slab of red-brown rosewood for the fretboard. I plan to use as much of this as possible, and trust that it's a great strengthener for warp and twist.
  • I'm working up plans for a bass myself, but am unsure about what to use for a truss rod. Is yours a threaded steel rod? If not what are you using, Jere?
