Fox Kestrel Diddley Bow

Meet the Fox Kestrel, a Diddley bow made from a Conzáles Dávila cigar box, with both piezo and magnetic pickup. Handmade handle, leg support and knobs made from beech. The neck is a reclaimed broomstick. It has woodburned position markers, bullskull inlay, woodburned brand name and logo, and some extra woodburned details. The nut is made of a hoseclamp and the tailpiece is a nice spoon handle. Handcut soundhole with fencing, and a nice handmade bridge made from mahogany and Brazillian greenheart with a brass fret on top. The headstock is also made from mahogany. It has a handwound magnetic pickup (rosewood) and a piezo that is embedded in a rosewood cover in between the neck and soundboard. The pickups can be selected with a switch and have volume and tone control. The box can still be opened :)

This one is named after the fox kestrel (Falco alopex) because its small size and warm colors. The fox kestrel is a large, slender kestrel with long, narrow wings and tail. It breeds in the savanna region south of the Sahara from Mali eastwards as far as Ethiopia and north-west Kenya. It occasionally wanders west to Senegal, the Gambia and Guinea and south to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It rarely hovers, preferring to hunt from a perch in a tree or on a rock. It feeds on insects, lizards and small mammals. It generally catches food on the ground but also hunts for flying insects escaping from grass fires. Little is known about its breeding habits. The nest site is a hole or crevice in a cliff or on a ledge. No nesting material is used. The clutch is thought to consist of two or three eggs. The birds sometimes breed in loose colonies of up to 20 pairs.
