AGP #364 - ‘’Château de Wâkefield’’

AGP #364 – “Château de Wâkefield”4 String Tenor Wine Box GuitarScale: 584.2mm/23inchesStrings: .032NW/.024NW/.018PS/.014PS/Tuning : DGBEThe Wine Box was a generous gift from some long time good friends! It has solid 7mm Pine sides and 4mm Pine Plywood top & bottom, the laminated neck is recycled bits of Tasmanian Oak and Forest Red Gum, and the Fretboard is recycled Spotted Gum, a 6.2k MGB Mini Box Bucker Pickup is hardwired to the Output Jack. This Box was put on the work bench and taken off several times due to me not knowing what type of build to best use for this lovely Wine Box, I think the final decision was the right one!, But I’m not sure if I’m happy with the String Gauges I’ve used, I still have to lower the action a bit more yet, but the strings do seem a bit tight, and harsh on my poor old hamfisted bricklayer’s fingertips.Perhaps the “King of the Tenor Guitar” Uncle John may enlighten me with some of his vast knowledge of all things Tenorish! :-)

  • Thanks 'UJ', and don't be so modest, it's a well known fact that your fave CBG's are 4 String Tenors in Chicago Tuning and your love and knowledge of the instrument is well known right across the Cigar Box Nation.

After a bit more investigation this morning into Tenor Strings, Tensions and Tuning's, I'm now in two minds what to do, either lighten up the DGBE Strings to .026W/.020W/.015P/.011P/ or  change the Strings to  .032/.022/.014/.010/ and the Tuning to CGCG, with the option of also tuning to DADA or Std Tenor Tuning of CGDA.  ;-)

  • "Thanks again Rev", will no doubt use the Signature Headstock Label on some future builds, just done it here for something different!, it was burned in with a Pyrography Pen :-)

  • A great beauty! Ha, I am the master of nothing! I play my tenors in Chicago tuning. DGBE like the 4 small strings on a standard six and the same string relationships as a uke!
  • This is a real looker! Is your headstock label something new for your builds? Is it from a branding iron? Cool! (I tried to address the string tension in another picture...)
