Update on the effects of the springs: I removed the 2nd and 4th springs. Now with only 3 springs spaced farther apart, there is a noticeable difference in the sound. The reverb effect I was looking for is now there. So, if you try this at home, less springs and farther apart seems to work better.
Some difference is good. A lot of us have the urge to try quite a few things. I had a couple of springs in one that my friend, Chris Lyons, made. It sounded good, but I don't know how much difference the springs made.
