I've just started using another variation on this method - making the cuts 3/4" apart and using the same width chisel to attack downwards from one side. Seemed to work pretty well on my last 2 necks, very little clean up required and over very quickly!
thats exactly how i cut out mine . i didnt have a chisel the first time so i sawed a cut , poped it off with a knife , and repeat and repeat and..... lol took forever !

The work begins lots of chisel work to come so the top will clear the neck
