Thank you Roosterman. I applaud your efforts to take on this challenge. Have you seen the Stroh uke pictures I posted on my page also? Weight really should not be a problem. Note how the uke has a stand to rest on your leg. A 4 string tenor guitar would be perfect. I would be fasinated if the tone sounded like a 78 RPM record being played on an old Victrola. Best Wishes for a successful build. Please keep me posted. Enjoy.
Thanks so much for helping to make the Birmingham CBG festival such a success. Your presentation on building CBGs is still resonating in my head - I definitely need to visit more car boot sales - perhaps in Inverness, but that's a bit of a hike from Brighton :) Hope it was a success for you. Great to meet you and hope to see you again at next years.
hi ben, good to meet you at the fest. enjoyed the car boot n pound shop tutorial, some health n safety issues maybe... will give you a shout for some hints when i get my belt sander. take it easy :0)
yeah just about recovered. the whole weekend took it out of me. was great meeting everyone. really friendly scene you are all apart of and was moved by all the kind comments on my build (abiet not a CBG) One of the next things i wanna work on is a real nice looking jigdoll. i did try making one befor but he was chunky and didnt work very well.
Hi Roosterman!
Thanks for your interest. As a non CBG builder your dual-purpose 3 or 4 stringer which I bought at the Festival is the first CBG I've ever handled or played.
I got into the CBG scene because of my interest in early, rhythmic, juke-joint blues. I've been having 6-string lessons, as a geriatric beginner, for about 3 years, and I've found it hard going.
Well, with your little guitar, hypnotic blues rhythms just seem to fall out of it! For the first time as a guitar player, I've found myself recording rhythm patterns that I've invented - or maybe they were lodged in my memory all along!
I recently heard a song by bluesman Robert Belfour, and loved the riff he played but couldn't work out how to do it on my 6-string. With your CBG, the riff just seemed to play itself!
So I'm very impressed. Your CBG is well made and the pickup is impressive with a lot of crunch!
I've three queries:
1) Action. You suggested I could raise the action at the nut by sliding some 20p pieces under it. Not wanting to break anything, could you tell me if the nut is glued down (I almost wrote "do you glue your nuts" but that sounds a bit kinky) or whether it's free-floating and held down by the string tension?
2) 4 string option. There are only 3 holes in the endplate of the guitar - I assume the two lightest strings will thread through a single hole?
3) String gauge - those fitted look like the bottom E, A and D of a 9 - or possibly 10 - gauge set. Have I got that right?
Hey Dude!
I registered a while ago, then kinda forgot... Got a mail from them t'other day so I figured... I've got something to show, I better start showin'...
Hey Roosterman, thanks for the nod on the reso. Yes, Mr. Hollowbelly has a resonator that I built... Don't tell anyone but he's a sucker for rust.... LOL (me too, by the way. heheheh) Once again let me take this opportunity to say that I really like the stuff you build as well...One day soon I am going to take a crack at spinning a cone. Your video was brilliant...... Take care - Jim
Okay Roosterman you are at the top of the list for guys that are going to buy a guitar from me someday.. LOL.. Seriously thanks again for the nod.. I appreciate it... I'll keep you posted on my progress with the cone.
hi ben, hows it goin? i noticed the homegrown site is a mr site site??? am lookin for a site and had daft quotes to get one sorted so been lookin at mr site, how did u fare with building it? how many times can i mention the word site in a sentence eh? any advice would be very welcome. cheers :0)
hey boss do we have a logo yet I'd like to try my hand at printing some stickers if no logo is available tell me what you want and I can throw somthing together and show it to you and chickenbone see if it's in the vien you were looking for
nope not in the printing business just a misguided soul with to much free time.I turn a lot of my artwork into prints I just got to thinking if I wanted to make stickers all I would have to do is change paper stock, just let me know when you are ready and I'll be more than happy to pitch in.
Hi Ben - Thanks for leaving the comment on my recent vid. You asked how I created the backline / drums >> I like to use Ableton Live these days. Like you, I have a murky past messing with dance music production and I used to use both Cubase and Logic - But I settled on Ableton in recent years cos it just does everything I want - simply.
I put this drum track together quite quickly (I set myself a tight time limit of 1 or 2 hours, otherwise I bugger about too much). I use a combination of drum loops and various kits loaded into Battery (a cool Native Instruments drum sampler plugin). Once I've got the sounds I want I then build the track structure from the various loops.
Let me know if you want to hear more... And thanks for the wood I used for the fretboard on this cbg.
Hi Ben ,
Yep, I made my telephone mic. Its really simple. I remembered reading an interview with bib log who talked about how he did it , then I saw BB Redshaw in vids from the fes in 2009.
I.ve just connected an old guitar cable to the terminals that go to the earpiece - not the mic.
I'm just waiting for a bunch of old military headphones to arrive - my plan is to see what they sound like when used as mics.
I look forward to hearing your mic in action ;-)
Hey Rooster....it's good to be back. I've been absent from here for far too long. I have been doing commissions mostly. My plan is to start doing more of what I feel like doing and then just putting it up for sale on my website. I just starting building guitars again. So, I should be around more often. Hope things are going well.
My web address is www.DeltaBluesClassics.com. I have a couple of pages of guitars on there, but they're all sold. I removed the purchase buttons for now until I get caught up. Check out my Youtube channels if you get a chance. My main channel is called RamblinAround and the I have one for DeltaBluesClassics as well. Talk to ya later...Jeff.
Hi Roosterman, the charity gig is at Maplecourt hotel, saturday 4th june,
hoping it will start around twelve in the afternoon..there is a few bands etc.dj,s...my son is running the event.not sure what time we go on stage, but hope we are the first on,,dont like to follow a very loud band,as it tends to make you play a lot louder than you may like to play..you never know ,?we could end up being the loudest..i will look out for you.
I've been playing your 3 (or 4) string "Las Cabrillas" CBG since I purchased it in October and am gradually getting to grips with CBG playing -
In fact my guitar tutor has asked me to accompany him on rhythm CBG when he does his next "open mic" session down at his local: never thought I'd be playing in public, but there you go! (We hope to play as a duo at Boxstock's open mic in October!)
Now Ben, when I first bought the guitar you kindly mentioned that you could send me a deeper nut to raise the action a few millimetres. Having got used to playing, I think I'd prefer a higher action so I wondered if the offer of a replacement nut is still available? I think I'd need to raise the strings about 3mm - they're about 1mm off the fretboard at the first fret at present.
Hope you are ok and still producing your masterpieces - I'll be looking to buy another at Boxstock 2011!
Hi.. how,s things since we last met...Ive had flu..so not much building cbg,s right now.will be having another charity gig at same place in Inverness on 3rd sept,,see you soon.
Hiya Ben, yeah the case arrived thanks mate .. I'm very pleased with it. If you have a look at my page later I will add a few Pictures of what I have done with it. Now't special, but I like the look I managed to get from it.
Some extremly cool guitars on your photos Randy! Have you ever thought about doing a Flying V shaped CBG? I'd love a Flying V styled four string fretted guitar for really rocking out to some Classic Rock CBG style! Let me know if it takes your fancy!
Hey cheers for the add, yeah am definitely looking my dreams and my bank balance seem to be at odds but if i manage to convince the mrs to stop eating and drinking for a few months i be reet haha.

Sorry for not responding sooner Ben.
Yep - I run my telephone mic through a compressor, add a little distortion and reverb. Makes all the difference to my lousy vocals.
I look forward to hearing more from you ;-)
