Diddlin' around looking for business card boxes for my wife - I had some old cigar boxes of my dad's laying around and put a divider in one, then started looking for more attractive boxes, found this site, and fell in love!
Sometimes I use that for the computer. Lets me know where I'm getting spam from if I get it. Now I have major grooves in my fingers from trying to learn the Middle Eastern and Blues riffs. I'm going to try and get to Best Buys tomorrow for a small amp just so I can blast my neighborhood. I read what you posted about how you got started on these and how it was to work with Dad's tools. That was also very nice praise: calling him a master amateur woodworker. That's special praise since you yourself are so talented. Anyway, it was touching. Did you ever finish the one for your boss and how does he like it?
Mom and I got into reading a series of books by Jane Auell about the saga of the Clan of the Cave Bear. We would wait expectantly for the next one in the series, read it, and have fun talking about the life of the cavewoman who is the main character. Well, after not publishing a new one in a couple of years one just came out and believe it or not it took me a month before I got it ... not being able to share it with her was an emotional trip. We had the same thing with another series of books called The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. I haven't been able to read any more of those, either. I think that you carrying on the tradition of wood working and giving your efforts as gifts is fantastic! Remember all the card boxes Dad made and gave away? I love the jewelry box he gave me. I don't know if he ever made jewelry boxes for Stacey, Marcia, Gregg and Colleen. I'll try to ask Colleen and let you know.
By the way, I thought it was interesting that the other guys were surprised at how talented you are. They REALLY don't know you, do they! If they had any idea of what you can do they would be astonished. I think you and I are similar in that we think anything we can do or anything we know is just common stuff. I'm learning that it is not.
howdy hal--just stopped by to say i,m not exactly sure of the tuning on the vintage sweeper cause i tuned it by ear its in the style of G D G but might not be exactly that it could be higher or lower in tuning. just got new strings in sets of bulk -dozen at a time--and the guage i got this time is 42--32--22 in phospher bronze. when ya buy them in bulk you can get them cheap.
Thanks for the friendship, Hal. I got to thinking the other day about your comment regarding replacing electronic parts. Have you thought of getting an old VCR or radio circuit board to practice on? You could get some desoldering braid, a solder sucker, good eye protection, and try "swapping" components on it until you get the mechanics down. Just a thought. See Ya!
Thanks Hal, its a bit rough but the whole build is filled with firsts. First electric, under bridge piezo, non through neck design, first time laminating timber, soldering - de solderiing. Here's a bit of noodling on the beast. Test Drive the Deco build
Hey Hal! Very cool pic's!!! Whats your prices on your boxes? I can't seem to find any good boxes on e bay. I have a few that I got a while back ,but there limited on what I can do with them. My home adress is blueduck_1958@yahoo.com Rooster Later
It should give you a pretty good idea how to build one (except I did a flat guitar-life headstock instead of a slotted scroll headstock). You can also check out the builder groups on both www.everythingdulcimer.com and the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer Ning (http://mountaindulcimer.ning.com/).
Since then I build another rectangular mountain dulcimer. When I get better at steam bending wood, I'll try an hour glass body design. When I do, you'll likely hear about it on CBN.
I get most of the wood I use from a neighbor with a woodmizer sawmill. The trees come from around this area. I did purchase a Sapele back and side set on ebay. But most of what I use is within a 5 mile radius from my place.
I am doing a detailed write-up of my Flying V Dulcimer Build under my CBN discussion Group "Home Made Resonator Boxes 101, v.2.0". The discussion is titled "My Flying "V" Dulcimer Project". You might want to check it out. I'll be adding to it as the project progresses.
Hey, Hal I've done a couple of boxes. I have a hard time getting pics to come up on my computer. As soon as I can get that solved I'll get some up. Great boxes!! Rooster

Hi mate - yup, I just bend up a bit of brass (I usually use antique finger plates / door push plates) and fit strat single saddles - works a treat!

Hi H.H.
I was reading through the treads on CBN and saw that you were interested in building a "real" mountain dulcimer. I built one maybe a year and a half ago and documented it on CBN at this link: http://www.cigarboxnation.com/group/HMRB101/forum/topics/rand-moore...
