Kia Ora people: Just caught onto this and about to start planning a build All seems sort of straight forward but "The Neck" bit and fretting. Any ideas and advice really appreciated.
Anyone heading Tauranga way, stop in for a cuppa
Hi Kirsten,
I have been using laminated necks to get the strength. Unfortunatly NZ hard woods 1/4 sawn are a little harder to find. If you can find some old native from a 100 year old house it should be pretty good. I am making another at the moment, this time I will try some different tunings and maybe a mag pickup. I take a long time doing them, mostly by hand and going for the feel. It's a fun hobby
Kalmario, I used pine it was fine. Lol. But no for my first one I just had some pine from Bunnings, its held straight and true no worries, just dont use high tension strings. I have however moved on to rimu :D
Anyway whats anyone doing? I'm currently about to start my first commissioned piece :D (nothing fancy tho, ive only made a total of 3!!)
a 3 stringed cigar box guitar
neck wood, find the hardest you can find, recycled natives look nice, avoid pine if you can , if you can't make sure the grain is going the right way i.e. |||||||||||| instead of: _or \
what are you planning on making?
cigar boxes:
A) try trade me, beware though its expensive.
B) Havana house : on customs st west off queen st. expensive too, but at least you can see what they have.
C) CB gitty will send them from the states, nice boxes, bigger sized and no annoying do not smoke adds to peel off. you can order other parts while you are at it (fret wire tuners etc)
another question is there anyone in this group that makes and sells cigar box guitars
where do i get a cigar box from as i aint seen those for years and what sort of wood to use for neck? and what size fret wire and where to get it or can you use jumbo paper clips
what exactly would you like to know? best idea is to start finding parts.
