The black wood is all ebony that I shaped thanks to the Luthier's Friend available at LMI. It uses a dovetail neck joint but the fit was not as tight as I would have liked so I went ahead and put a screw in it as well. The sound hole covers I found at a Michael's craft store. The tops of the pot knobs are buttons that I epoxied on and the pots are inset so they do not stick up too high for aesthetic reasons. Tone, volume, and blend. I am building a new bridge as the tone is a bit twangy and I hope a larger bridge will mellow it some.

I began my new year with a massive cup of Deadman's Reach coffee from Portland, and a good sized piece of sweet potato pie from Big Mama's house, while I watched Laurie Lee Campbell's newest offering, "Father Time." It's virtually impossible to watch anything Laurie Lee does and not smile; not feel hopeful about the road ahead, regardless of the journey.
It's virtually impossible to watch anything Laurie Lee does and not smile; not feel hopeful about the road ahead, regardless of the journey.

I'm feeling the crunch here at the Nation. It's really about building guitars, and posting the results. You can have a houseful of CBG's, but if you didn't build them, it's not so interesting. So, I've been collecting cigar boxes, and reading about how to build, which really takes me out of my comfort zone. I've also sold the CBG idea to my partner in crime and music, Brad, who knows a thing or two about guitars. I was thrilled when he asked for a how-to-build-cigar-box-guitars video for Christmas. So, it's my turn to watch it and move forward with the plan.

It's good to stretch and grow, even when you don't want to. I'm happy to purchase cigar box guitars from the talented builders on CBN and ebay. The problem is, I want them all. I love the red Punch boxes as much as I love the Shane Speal Macanudo specials, as much as I love the Ashton wood series. I saw a magnificent grey Don Thomas CBG on CBN, so the search for a grey Don Thomas box was inevitable. Soon I had a stack of boxes and nothing else but the CBG habit. So, I had to switch my inner dialog from 'I'm a writer, I don't build,' to 'I'm a writer and I want to build.' If I want as many cigar box guitars as I have boxes, I'd better get my ass in gear and carve out some time for this. Otherwise, I'll have to sell my house -- and possibly a child -- to support my CBG habit.

In the meantime, I'm still learning to play, and I'm grateful as hell for the video's posted here, as well as Bluesboy Jag's how-to that I ordered. Again, if you don't play (or build) you're kind of on the other side of the tracks. This year I resolve to cross the line.

Happy New Year ladies....and many thanks to Laurie Lee for singing us out of 2009, wretched year that it was. Is anyone else having this problem?tag:www.cigarboxnation.com,2009-12-22:2592684:Topic:1636022009-12-22T11:48:58.219ZNightOwlhttps://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/AlysonShelton

Sisters of CBN....maybe we should share something about who we are, where we're from (or where we're going?) Write as much or as little as you'd like. Hell, make it up if you want to. We won't know any different -- unless you become a CBG star.
Let's face it, the music world is dominated by men. When you start breaking down the various sub-groups and look at them individually, clearly anything to do with building instruments is predominately male. The demographic breakdown of the membership roll here at CBN tells that story quite well.... And Genres -- well we've all heard the term "Bluesmen".... (That's why I named my company "Blues Women Works.") Women work in the Blues world - they sing, they play, they build, they produce, and…
We need the ability to connect with one another here on the Nation. This group shouldn't take the place of other groups that are specific to some of the questions that we might have about building guitars or other instruments, but I think that it should serve as a place for us to connect, and to highlight the work that women on this forum do. Some of the best builds that I have seen on the Nation have been done by women. Some of the most helpful people that I've encountered here are women. So let's help each other out, offer support, and share ideas without segregating ourselves from the rest of the gang here on the Nation.

There are so many helpful fellas out there with a wealth of knowledge, and I am happy and proud to call them friends. I'll continue to connect with them in other groups and share ideas. But this group is a place that I'll value for the connections that I make with women who share a passion for building instruments.

Please feel free to add you own thoughts about why this place might be important to you!

Best regards, and thanks for joining up!
We all need some inspiration and feedback at times and this would be a great place to post your latest build. To display images in your post, you can click the camera icon in the bar that reads "Post" -- it is the last icon on the right! You can also attach files to your messages at the bottom of the post and upload them from your desktop.
